Validation of Theory: Exploring and Reframing Popper’s Worlds

چکیده

Popper’s well-known arguments describe the need for advancing social theory through a process of falsification. Despite Popper’s call, there has been little change in the academic process of theory development and testing. This paper builds on Popper’s lesser-known idea of “three worlds” (physical, emotional/conceptual, and theoretical) to investigate the relationship between knowledge, theory, and action. In this paper, I explore his three worlds to identify alternative routes to support the validation of theory. I suggest there are alternative methods for validation, both between, and within, the three worlds and that a combination of validation and falsification methods may be superior to any one method. Integral thinking is also put forward to support the validation process. Rather than repeating the call for full Popperian falsification, this paper recognizes that the current level of social theorizing provides little opportunity for such falsification. Rather than sidestepping the goal of Popperian falsification, the paths suggested here may be seen as providing both validation and falsification as stepping-stones toward the goal of more effective social and organizational theory.

The Emergence and Evolution of Three Worlds

Karl Popper’s three worlds theory (3Wt) is a metaphysical theory that purports to provide an ordering of all entities in reality. This ordering is realized by the physical, mental and abstract status that entities possess. This status characterises the entities in world 1, world 2 en world 3, respectively. The ‘triadistic’ metaphysics of Popper forms an alternative for monistic and dualistic th...

The Application of Karl Popper’s Three Worlds Schema to Questions about Information in the Fields of Complexity, Cybernetics, and Informatics

More technically leaning disciplines such as informatics, complexity theory, and cybernetics often make simplifying assumptions about human beings and their causal/informational roles within larger techo-social systems. This paper employs the philosopher Karl Popper’s three worlds schema to explore in depth the unique ways in which conscious human subjects process and create knowledge and infor...

Critical rationalism and engineering: methodology

Engineering deals with different problem situations than science, and theories in engineering are different to theories in science. So, the growth of knowledge in engineering is also different to that in science. Nonetheless, methodological issues in engineering epistemology can be explored by adapting frameworks already established in the philosophy of science. In this paper I use critical rat...

Hierarchies of Distinctions as Generators of System Theories

This paper generates a variety of general-systems theoretic concepts and a range of systems theories using a minimal set of primitives. The notion of a distinction is taken as primitive and the natural hierarchy of distinctions becomes the primitive structure. A number of system theories are then analysed in terms of these primitives: Zadeh’s fuzzy sets theory; Klir’s epistemological hierarchy ...

From Group Selection to Ecological Niches Popper’s Rethinking of Evolution in the Light of Hayek’s Theory of Culture1

Hayek’s The Sensory Order contains a physicalistic identity theory of the mind. Popper criticized it, saying that it could not explain the higher functions of language. Hayek took up that challenge in a manuscript but failed to refute Popper’s arguments. Drawing upon the same manuscript, Hayek developed a theory of behavioural rules and cultural evolution. Despite his criticism of the theory of...
